The story behind Proteus was revealed by courtroom records.
Dutch soldier Rijkhaart, exiled to a deserted island for committing what was the serious crime of homosexuality, becomes attracted to and falls in love with Claas, a man who is being punished for a crime he didn't commit. It is then that Claus, struggling to survive in a closed environment, starts to delude and manipulate Ricard and the other men. John Greyson, producer of Lilies, uses bold and beautiful imagery to bring us this expansive love story based on fact and set against the backdrop of eighteenth century South Africa.
