In 1966, when the National Ballet of Cuba performed in Paris, ten
of the troupe's dancers requested asylum from the government of
France. Their reason: "If we go back to Cuba, we'll be sent to a
concentration camp for homosexuals." Exactly what went on at the
camp that these men feared so much? This documentary by Francois
Truffaut's cameraman Nestor Almendros uncovers the truth about the
Cuban camp through interviews with ex-internees now living in exile
abroad, and examines the oppression of gays throughout history by
such figures as Hitler, Mao, Stalin and McAarthur. Interviews with
international luminaries such as Susan Sontag, Allan Ginsberg, and
Cuban writer Reynaldo Arenas round out this compelling work, a must-see
for anyone interested subject of Before Pight Falls lesbian and
gay history or human rights in general.
